Description
On Friday, March 23, 2012 Jubilee Arts will host Dancing for a Cause, our 2012 dance gala & fundraiser to support the operations of our programming. The event will be held at the luxurious 1840’s Plaza located in Downtown Baltimore. Guests will enjoy food, great R&B and Soul music, raffles, auctions and dancing. There will be special dance presentations of Chicago Step, Hand Dance and Urban Line Dance by Jubilee Arts instructors and participants.
These styles of dances find their beginnings in the Swing era, and are a rich part of African American and American history. In recent years, the dances have grown again in popularity, with events and grand competitions being held across the nation and internationally.
Jubilee Arts is located on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue once home to the legendary Royal Theatre, Sphinx Club and others, where many of these dances, Baltimore Hand Dance in particular, were first enjoyed. Formerly the Mecca of African-American arts and entertainment in Baltimore, this area has been struggling for decades to regain its former glory and combat the ills of poverty, drugs and violence. It is the mission of Jubilee Arts to restore the rich cultural heritage and vivacity of this famous corridor and provide arts opportunities to the people in this community.
