Description
Water Sonettos, on view at In/Flux Gallery from May 4th through May 24th, brings together local artists, activists and community members to explore our relationship to water systems and water ecology. Creating a unique platform for awareness and examination through the combination of art, NGOs and educational programming the exhibit tackles regional and global perspectives on water’s role in the matrix of life.

Jann Rosen-Queralt, artist and Maryland Institute College of Art faculty, has been exploring issues around water, ecology and advocacy in her artwork for many years. Her recent work stems in part from a trip to Mali with the Lutheran World Relief Organization, where she spent time with female leaders of a shallot cooperative, witnessing the transformative power of crops yielded through irrigation technology, education, and collaborative effort. Inspired by the resilience and ingenuity of these women Rosen-Queralt has constructed a powerful new body of work.

When considering how to exhibit her recent efforts Rosen-Queralt felt compelled to fortify the voice of her chosen cause by including other artists from the area whose work also looks to water as a source of inspiration and meditation. Laura Amusen, Laure Drogul, Marian Glebes, Greenpants, Lisa Moren, Katie O’Mera, Valeska Populoh & Jacob Whayne Dillow, and Eileen Wold, will present works related in subject and theme.

The exhibition will also feature information and public programs to connect artists and viewers to local and international NGO’s and scientific researchers also dealing with water quality issues and poverty reduction in their work. Public programs will allow visitors to meet and learn more about these programs and an exhibition resource area will provide further information on these issues and ways to get involved. Local youth from Baltimore City schools and community groups will visit the exhibition on field trips and participate in art-making workshops responding to the artwork and the work of organizations and scientists who study and protect water.
